Yes, we have snow...

Oh fun, 2 feet of snow on the last weekend of shopping before Christmas and then no school on Monday (for one of the boys).  There was lots of fun in the snow especially sledding down the hill at the end of our block.  And lots of hot chocolate, cookies, soup and snuggling under the blankies.  Our dog, part reindeer he is, had the most fun leaping around in the fluffy white snow.

Stop back on Thursday for the DCRU Blog Hop and then I'm taking a blog break until after the new year. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and all the best in 2010!

Ornament Money and/or Gift Card Holder Tutorials

Yippee, it's my turn for a tutorial at Die Cuts R Us.  Head over to the DT blog and have a peek but I'm also posting it here.  You'll want to check out the DT blog though because the Epic Six Giveaway is still going on.  Click here and get all the juicy details on how YOU can win.

I will try to keep this brief since you probably have 101 things to get done today.  I know I do!  But if you have a few moments to spare, here's a nice way to package your gift cards and money for the holidays. And look, you can hang them on your tree for your loved ones to find!

For this Santa Claus Ornament Holder, note that if you use your Nesties, your gift card will be slightly visible from the front.  However, money (and who doesn't like receiving that!) fits just perfectly and is not visible.  This is just another fun use for your Nesties.

Materials:
Die Cutting Machine (click here if you don't have one and find out how to WIN one!!)
Patterned Paper and Chipboard: Eskimo Kisses by Basic Grey
Spellbinders Nestabilities: Petite Scallop Circle and Petite Circle
Misc:  Gold Cord, Tab Punch, 3D Dots, SU Cardstock
  • Cut a circle in plain cardstock from largest Scallop Circle Nestie.
  • Cut 3 circles in patterned paper from your largest Circle Nestie.
  • Cut one of the patterned circles in half.
  • Adhere one of the halves to the bottom of the other patterned circle (uncut).
  • Use glue only on the sides and bottom so that you get a pouch.
  • Adhere that circle and the other patterned paper circle to the front and back of your plain cardstock circle.
  • Punch tab.  Cut small piece of silver cord.  Adhere to ornament to form a little hook.
  • Decorate the front and/or back as you see fit!  I just added a chipboard Santa from the Eskimo Kisses Collection.  Isn't he a cutie?!
Here's a variation on an Ornament Gift Card Holder.

For your circles, you can hand cut them or use any die cut machine, like the Cricut.  You can find circles on a number of the cartridges. I happened to use the Accent Essentials cartridge for my circles.  I cut the plain cardstock at 4 1/2" for one circle.  For the patterned paper, I cut 3 patterned paper circles at 4 1/4".  Follow the instructions above.  Embellish as you wish, easy peasy and a great way to package your gift cards and money this Christmas!

If you make any ornament gift card holders, be sure to link back to the DCRU DT blog!  We love admiring your crafty creations!!

This is the last shopping weekend before Christmas so I hope you are almost ready. I'm getting there...slow but sure. This is also the last DCRU challenge for 2009!! It's been such a treat to be part of the DCRU fun this year and we all love having YOU join us!! Be sure to link up your challenge entries here by Saturday at midnight EST.  Have a great weekend!

Etsy Featured Artists - Mike and Donna Brown from Brown's Country Originals

Time for another Etsy Artist Feature!  I've taken them out of order to present Mike and Donna Brown from Brown's Country Originals.  Their Etsy shop is just perfect for this time of year considering all the fabulous Christmas items they've made.  All of their items are decorative one of a kind pieces, like this Paper Mache Belsnickel Tan Robe PM109.  What's a Belsnickel, you ask?  Belsnickel is a collectible fur clad Old-World Santa Claus figurine that originated in northwestern Germany along the Rhine.  In the 19th century, he was meant to scare the community but brought goodies to those who behaved.  This Belsnickel was made from paper mache.  The trim around his hood and hands is real fur.  His beard is made from sheep wool and he's carrying feather trees in his arms.  He's antiqued for an old aged appearance.  Mike and Donna spent approximately 2 weeks to create him.  Isn't he incredible?  Let's see a few other things they've designed and find out a little more about this talented husband and wife team.

1. Tell us about you ~ your name, location, hobbies and interests. Where do you sell your handmade items?

We are Mike and Donna Brown a husband and wife team. We are self-taught artists. We live in a small town called Adamstown, located in a Pennsylvania. We enjoying spending time camping and fishing with our son and beagle named Sally.   We can be found on Etsy at BrownsCo (Brown's Country Originals).

2. Tell us about your art and how you got your start selling your handmade items on Etsy?

We are a husband and wife artist team. I work with wood, chalkware, clay and paper mache. My wife works with dried, fresh and artificial flowers and hypertufa. These creative passions led us in 2008 to start Brown’s Country Originals. The name came from living in the country and our last name.

Hypertufa is a lite weight concrete. Besides the paper mache and chalkware we have a line of garden items my wife makes country/primitive hypertufa birdbaths, flower planters and flower pots. I make country/primitive wooden potting benches, planter and garden stakes.

We decided to use Etsy to make our internet debut.

3. What inspires your art?

Life events, historical work and old vintage pieces.

4. Do you have any advice for those who are new to selling on Etsy?

Do not give up ...keep at it.

5. Do you have any favorite Etsy artists?

I think all the artists on Etsy are very creative, I really do not have a favorite.

6. Are there any other websites or stores where we can find you?

You can find our work on the following websites:

Many thanks to Mike and Donna for sharing their creative passions with us today!  If you are looking for unique, vintage handmade paper mache and chalkware items, be sure to stop by their sites listed above and their Etsy shop, Brown's Country Originals.

Challenges- Sassy Studio Designs and Dare U 2 Digi Stamp

While visiting the lovely followers of the DCRU DT blog, I often find challenges that would apply to something I'm working on.  Here's a treat bag full of homemade Spritz cookies and it's just right for this week's challenge at Sassy Studio Designs (Sweet Treat Fun) and Dare U 2 Digi Stamp (use red, green and one neutral color).  The digi stamp I used is Sassy Holiday Collection- Holiday Tags from Sassy Studio Designs.  Too sweet!!

If you want to make your own Spritz Cookies, here's an easy recipe.  We love using the cookie press.  My boys call it the cookie gun.

This recipe works well with the cookie press. The dough is not chilled and is easiest to use within two hours of preparation. The dough can also be colored with food coloring.

1 ½ cups butter or margarine
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup granulated sugar
½ tsp. almond extract
1 egg
4 cups all purpose flour
2 Tbsp. milk
1 tsp. baking powder

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Thoroughly cream butter and sugar. Add egg, milk, vanilla and almond extract; beat well. Stir together flour and baking powder; gradually add to creamed mixture, mixing to make a smooth dough. Do not chill. Place dough into cookie press and press cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 6-8 min. Remove from sheet and cool on rack. Makes 6 dozen cookies.

Dee-lish!!

Challenge - Crazy 4 Challenges and Whimsy Stamps

I made this Gift Card Holder and then found it was suitable for these 2 challenges.

Crazy 4 Challenges: Gift Card Holder (Week 14)
Whimsy Stamps: use a die cut (Challenge 31)

The patterned paper and chipboard die cut is from Basic Grey's Eskimo Collection.  Super cute, huh?!  Stay warm...

Featured Etsy Artist Maria of Travels

This week's featured Etsy artist is Maria of Travels.  In Maria's shop announcement, she states "from home to work, from park to party...life is a journey, not a destination ~ so have fun and look pretty while you're traveling."  Sounds good to me!  Maria is very new to Etsy and loving it so far.  She has handmade earrings, bracelets, unisex items and necklaces.  Some of her jewelry includes upcycled pieces.  Check out these Blue Hoops earrings made from a vintage necklace...so clever!

1. Tell us about you ~ your name, location, hobbies and interests. Where do you sell your handmade items?

I'm 24 year old student. I study cultural anthropology in Estonia and just love to travel (you probably guessed it already, lol)! I also make jewelry, mostly earrings, since I wear them so much.  I sell on Etsy and my shop name is Travels.

I have cute little crafting corner in my bedroom and I just love to sit and meditate with great music and create! It's like an addiction, where ever I am, I dream about my little corner (and vice versa)- above all, I'm just trying to find my place in this crazy, crazy world.

2. Tell us about your art and how you got your start selling your handmade items on Etsy?

I've been making jewelry since I was kid, usually for myself and for my friends. Now I discovered Etsy and it's a great opportunity to sell and show my creations!

3. What inspires your jewelry?

I find inspiration everywhere! Discovery Channel has the most inspiring programs, for example.

4. What is your own favorite design and why?
My own favorite (one of them) Fuscia Bracelet

I worked really hard and I'm really proud I made it!  (Update...that pretty bracelet has been sold!!)

Another favorite is this one of a kind bracelet:

5. Do you have any favorite Etsy artists?

I love Etsy, so many talented people!! One of my favorite shops is Katwise, operated by a really gifted girl with adorable creations! I hope that one day I can afford to buy one of those sweaters!!

6. Do you have anything else you'd like to share?

I'm new at selling. Hopefully, one day you can find my creations at craft fairs and shops.

Many thanks to Maria for sharing her talents with us!  Currently, she's offering free worldwide shipping and a free Christmas gift so check out her Etsy shop, Travels, and see what you can look pretty in while traveling!

Caardvarks Challenge - Using Digital

Ebony was a limited edition Digi Stamp from The Greeting Farm.  Isn't she the cutest?!  Yesterday, you saw her on my 2010 Diary with brown hair.  Today she's got hair to match her outfit.  I colored her in with Copics and added Crystal Effects to her headband and the skull on her shirt for added interest.  I used Nesties, punches and a bit of bling in the corners.  The image and sentiment are on dimensional tape so they "pop" off the card front.  I made her for the Caardvarks Challenge which is looking for projects using a digital stamp.  You have until the 20th to upload your entry.  Check it out and have fun with your digis!

2010 Diary Project - My Diary

I love this limited edition digi stamp, Ebony, from The Greeting Farm!  I had colored a few so I figured I'd cover Fantazya's 2010 Diary with her along with one of my favorite papers from Basic Grey's Eskimo Kisses Collection.  Cute, huh?  Not that I look like this, but it makes for a fun cover.  A flashback to my teen years which wasn't too long ago (yeah, right?).

If you'd like a chance to win one of Fantazya's 2010 Diaries, head over to her blog for details.  I'd love to have another; it makes a great gift!

Here we go again trying to get you in the holiday mood!  We celebrate Christmas and are in the mood after a weekend of holiday light shows, a Trim a Tree Party, baking cookies and adding more outside lights so the whole house glows!!  And a  little bit of weekend snow was fun, too.  So how about you?  Are you working on a holiday project?  Why don't you share it with the design team at Die Cuts R Us this week?  We'd love to see what you have created!

My project is an easy but important one...gift card holders!  And next week I'll share with you how to make an ornament gift card holder with your Circle Nestabilities.  No Nesties?  No problem, I'll show you alternatives.

Gift Card Holder Recipe:

Corner Rounder
SU Grosgrain Ribbon and Die Cut Stickers
Velcro

If you decide to play along, you have until this Saturday at midnight EST to link your project to Mr. Linky on the DCRU DT blog.   And if you upload to SCS, just remember to add DCRU.  Have fun and I can't wait to see your holiday projects!

Featured Etsy Artist Lucy of Fantazya

I am back again with another Etsy artist feature!  Today it's Lucy of Fantazya.  Earlier this year, I "met" Lucy while she was promoting her 2010 Trilingual Diary Project.

I've previously mentioned this super cool project which is a unique collaboration of artists and crafters from all over the world.  There are a number of Etsy artisans featured including a number from my favorite team - EtsyGreetings.  The diaries are sold with plain covers so that you can add your own personal touch, which is what I'm currently working on.  I'll post a photo later this week.  You can also purchase the diary decorated, embossed and even with a faux fur cover.  It's a great gift idea and every day features a talented artist for you to check out on the web.  I just love my 2010 Diary!  Great idea, Lucy!  Lucy's first language is French and I appreciated all her help in putting together my page (August 19, 2010) in the diary.  If you'd like a chance to win one, check out Lucy's blog for all the details.

What you'll discover about Lucy is that she is passionate about healthy living and recycling.  She has a talent for reusing clothes and fabrics to create beautiful fashions and pocketbooks.  Lucy also has some quality vintage items for sale in her shops.

Let's find out more about Lucy...

1. Tell us about you ~ your name, location, hobbies and interests. Where do you sell your handmade items?

My name is Lucy Baribeau.  I live in Canada, Québec. Beside almost any kind of crafting, I love to read health books, watch movies, do yoga, have dinner with friends and family, play Scrabble and walk with my dog. I try to have a fun and healthy way of living.  I sell my handmade items mostly by Internet, via Etsy and my personal website.

2. Tell us about your art and how you got your start selling your handmade items on Etsy?

I studied presentation of esthetic, photography, and haute-couture. I love to work at my house, having no boss, no straight schedules, doing what I want and I feel free! So you can imagine the joy I had when I discovered Etsy! What a beautiful and useful site for creators!

3. What inspires your art?

I like a lot of the tends. I always try to be “in."   It’s a strong challenge and motivation for me. My new goal, instead of making lot of pieces, is to make only one, but the good one! Something people will say: “I want it!” And I love the recycling and organic aspect. For me it is important, I feel good when I create using organic or recycled materials.

4. What is your own favorite design and why?

I love a lot of recycled pieces I did before.  You can see some here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantazyafantazies/sets/72157594363527757/

But for the moment, my favorite is my new dress, the Organic Cotton Mini Wrap Dress. It took me a lot of time, especially by pondering, to find exactly the piece that for me, it would be “the piece of the season.” It’s a dress made with 100% organic cotton twill. It is a very polyvalent dress that can be worn in the summer with sandals, to a cocktail party with beautiful accessories, in winter with a sweater and leggings under and even over your jeans.

5. Do you have any advice for those who are new to selling on Etsy?

Yes. You have to be a little detective. Look at the “Time machine 2”, it shows the live sellings and you can have a good idea of what people love. Test your items, make some modifications if necessary, go to the forum, ask questions, make your shop be seen. The hearts you receive are good clues about what people like about your creations.  Also the visual presentation of your shop is very important.

6. Do you have any favorite Etsy artists?

Yes, a lot! I like when they have a solid style, beautiful photos and quality items. Here are some favorites: aussiepatches, imyourpresent, redhotpottery, annacote, dillondesigns, jacquelineknits, sudlow, cathynichols, sjengraving, munieca, yasminbochi, BeaG, Wildewear, and ruffeoheartslilsnoty.

7. Do you have anything else you'd like to share? Are there any other websites or stores where we can find you?

I have a personal website: www.fantazya.ca , my flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/fantazyafantazies, and my blog: fantazya2.blogspot.com.

Give Lucy a visit and keep an eye out of her next project, the 2011 Diary!!  I'm looking forward to signing on again.  At least I'll know what I'm doing next time.  Thanks for sharing your talents with us, Lucy!!

Now you can find me overseas!!

Greetings on this Thursday, just 3 weeks from Christmas Eve!  Can you believe it how time just flys?!  It seems like yesterday and we were back in September when I was contacted by Nicolette, my Singapore friend of Infinite, regarding Christmas items.  Christmas?!  But Nicolette, I'm still in shorts basking in the afternoon sun, surely I can't start thinking of Santas, cold weather and Christmas cards!  But I did and it was such a fun time! First off, if you've been hanging around me long enough, you know that September was a rough month in that my lung collapsed and then the meds I was on were giving me awful migraines and other unpleasant side effects.  I was also going from doctor to doctor trying to figure out how to control my thoracic endometriosis which happened to have reared it's ugly head again. (It's under control now, thank you God!!)  Burying myself in mounds of Christmas crafts was a welcome distraction and I was super excited about Nicolette's latest venture.  (You can also read up on her prior adventures here.) Nicolette and I went back and forth and in the end, over 50 greeting cards, mini cards, tags, and gift card holders made their way safely to Singapore for sale overseas!!  Nicolette has gone from selling handmade at the fleas and now you'll find her and her partner in a rental space within a store called, The BlogShop

So, if you are ever in Singapore, be sure to stop in and have a look!  Just remember you don't have to travel that far to see my paper designs, just click on Cara's Scrap 'N Stamp Art and shop your heart out with free shipping when you purchase any item from my Christmas/Winter section!  Also, have a peek at Nicolette's blog for a look inside her adventures in Singapore.  Stop by and wish her well, say hello!  You can also find her on Facebook and don't forget you can find me on Facebook too!  Fan us and you'll be the first to know of all the specials and latest goodies in our shops.  Bye for now...
